Do backhoes have a PTO?
Do backhoes have a PTO?
Yes, certain backhoe attachments are designed to work with a tractor’s PTO (Power Take-Off) system. Unlike standalone excavators, a PTO backhoe relies on the tractor’s pto pump and hydraulics to power the bucket cylinder digging force. This setup allows the backhoe to achieve impressive digging depth, bucket rotation, and a wide swing arc, even when mounted on the tractor’s 3 point hitch.
For landowners or farmers who have already purchased a reliable tractor, adding a tractor backhoe attachment is a cost-effective way to expand digging capacity without buying an additional machine.
What does PTO stand for in tractors?
What does PTO stand for in tractors?
In tractors, PTO stands for “Power Take-Off.” It is a powerful system that transfers rotational energy from the tractor’s engine to an implement or backhoe attachment. The PTO pump then drives the attachment’s hydraulics, powering the bucket, stabilizer, and boom functions.
This is the essential link that transforms a standard tractor into a multi-purpose digging and loading machine. Whether you need to handle trenching, small construction tasks, or landscaping, PTO is what makes a tractor backhoe attachment compatible and ready to perform.
How to choose a PTO backhoe?
How to choose a PTO backhoe?
When you’re ready to choose a PTO backhoe, consider these essential factors:
- Tractor Compatibility: Match the 3 point category of the backhoe with your tractor. Check weight, hydraulics, and center line clearance.
- Digging Power: Look at bucket cylinder digging force, maximum digging depth, and bucket rotation. Stronger hydraulics deliver deeper, cleaner cuts.
- Reach & Positioning: Review loading reach, down position performance, and the swing arc to see how well the attachment can move soil.
- Stability: A wide stabilizer spread gives a firmer base, especially on uneven ground.
- Needs & Use Case: Define whether you’ll use it for fencing, trenching, septic installation, or general landscaping. The right backhoe attachment should be suited to your daily tasks.
Pro tip: Don’t just add an item to your cart. Take time to learn about the attachment’s height, reach, and overall efficiency. The best PTO backhoe is one that is not just purchased but matched to your exact needs.
What are the advantages of a PTO backhoe?
What are the advantages of a PTO backhoe?
A PTO backhoe offers several unique advantages:
- Cost-Effective: Instead of buying a separate excavator, you can power a tractor backhoe attachment with your existing tractor.
- Versatile Digging: Delivers serious bucket cylinder digging force, maximum digging depth, and reliable bucket rotation for a variety of tasks.
- Flexible Positioning: The combination of stabilizer spread, down position strength, and wide swing arc ensures stable, accurate digging.
- Compact Yet Powerful: Ideal for property owners who need professional results without the bulk of heavy construction machinery.
- Compatible & Expandable: Easy to connect through the tractor’s PTO pump and 3 point system, making it highly compatible with multiple tractor models.
In short, a PTO backhoe attachment transforms an ordinary tractor into a powerful, multi-purpose digging machine — giving you the ability to handle trenches, foundations, culverts, and more with precision and strength.
What is the best backhoe for me?
What is the best backhoe for me?
• First, confirm your tractor’s horsepower range, then select a backhoe model that aligns with this specification to ensure optimal compatibility and performance.
• If your budget permits, we recommend the PRO-series backhoe—it delivers enhanced operability and advanced functionality that elevate overall work efficiency.
• For those with budget constraints, Farmry also offers essential models that still fully fulfill your basic operational requirements, balancing affordability and practicality.
What is the difference between basic and pro version
What is the difference between basic and pro version
• For standard models, domestic hydraulic valves are used
• For PRO-series models, imported Walvoil (Italy) hydraulic valves are adopted.
The Walvoil valves on PRO models deliver significantly better overall handling performance.
What is the main difference between BH600/700/820/920?
What is the main difference between BH600/700/820/920?
• A higher model number indicates a greater digging depth and working range.
• The BH600 series does not include a log grapple, while the BH700/820/920 series are equipped with hydraulic grapple.
• The BH600/700 series feature a smaller pump displacement, whereas the BH820/920 series have a larger pump displacement.
• The BH600 series is compatible with 3-point CAT I hitches; the BH700/820 series (excluding skid steer versions) are compatible with 3-point CAT I/II hitches; the BH920 series (excluding skid steer versions) is compatible with 3-point CAT II hitches.
• For detailed information, please refer to the technical specification sheet.
What type of maintenance do backhoe required?
What type of maintenance do backhoe required?
During the product design phase, Farmry prioritized the convenience of daily maintenance. Follow these steps when performing routine maintenance checks:
• Grease the pivot points.
• Inspect all fastening bolts for looseness.
• Check for hydraulic fluid leaks in the hydraulic lines.
• Verify the hydraulic oil level in the reservoir.
• Inspect the hitch linkages for looseness or deformation.
• Ensure the PTO pump connection is secure, and check for chain or latch failure.
• Confirm no safety decals are missing.
Your user manual contains detailed instructions for each step. Adhering to the manual’s guidelines will ensure your equipment operates reliably and has an extended service life.

The product you receive will not be fully assembled. We provide detailed images and videos for guidance, and you may also refer to the product manual during installation. For any questions, please contact our after-sales support team for assistance.
What is the required PTO speed for tractor powder backhoe?
What is the required PTO speed for tractor powder backhoe?
The tractor must have a 1-3/8", 6-spline PTO shaft to fit the pump drive coupler, and the tractor cannot operate at any speed other than 540 rpm.
It is not recommended that tractors with a variable speed PTO be used with the backhoe. Operating at speeds higher than 540 rpm can over speed the pump and cause early failures.
How to check if the PTO extender needed or not if purchasing tractor powerer backhoe?
How to check if the PTO extender needed or not if purchasing tractor powerer backhoe?
For the backhoe products (BH600, BH600 PRO, BH700, BH700 PRO, BH820, BH820 PRO, BH920, and BH920 PRO) compatible with tractor models,
When installing the PTO oil pump onto the tractor, interference may occur — this will prevent the pump from fully connecting to the tractor’s PTO shaft (see the left image below).
When you plan to purchase any of the above products, please be sure to confirm that there is sufficient space in the PTO shaft area of your tractor (refer to the dimension 7-3/4" shown in the right image below).

If there is insufficient space in this area, you will need to install a PTO shaft extender.
Another secenario is, if there is any components are located on the shadow area(160*224mm/6.3*8.8in) of PTO pump which install into the tractor PTO area, it also requires a PTO extender
This can be purchased on the Farmry website or at most agricultural machinery stores.
