FAQ

1. Do I need a CDL to drive a plow truck?

In most states, you do not need a CDL to operate a pickup snow plow for private use, residential driveway, or small business snow removal, as long as your truck stays within its normal weight rating and you are not transporting commercial loads.

The Farmry SP84 stump grinder is designed for standard consumer and contractor vehicles and fits half ton trucks, many ton trucks, and larger truck class models without turning your vehicle into a regulated commercial rig. It mounts through a front receiver mount, making it simple to use on a pickup, jeeps, or even some crossover platforms that support proper hitch systems. For more options, explore our full stump grinder collection.

This makes the SP84 a perfect choice for homeowners and light contractors who want professional capability without CDL complexity or extra money spent on licensing.

2. Is snow plowing hard on your truck?

Any snow plow adds load to a vehicle, but the SP84 is built to manage that stress safely. It is designed with balanced weight distribution, reinforced mounting points, and a strong straight blade that protects your truck when pushing heavy snow.

Compared with heavier commercial systems used on wheel loaders, skid steers, or tractors, a hitch-mounted plow like the SP84 operates at a more controlled level, making it easy to handle and safer for daily use.

Proper setup, correct height, and correct driving time management keep wear low while maintaining excellent clear performance on roads, parking lot, and alleys.

3. What is a snow plow truck?

A snow plow truck is any vehicle equipped with a mounted plow for pushing and loading snow during snow removal operations. This includes:

  • Pickups with pickup snow plow systems
  • Full sized UTVs and sport UTVs
  • Certain sized UTVs
  • Fits mid sized pickups
  • Some setups that even fits jeeps

The Farmry SP84 transforms your truck into a high-capacity snow clearing machine that can handle long driveways, parking lot clearing, and private roads with speed and control.

4. What type of truck is best for snow plowing?

The best truck depends on your market and use case. For the SP84, ideal options include:

  • Pickups that fits half ton trucks and above
  • Mid-sized pickups that support a front mount
  • Trucks designed for loading and repeated pushing
  • Vehicles with proper suspension and braking systems

Compared to machines like wheel loaders, filters pusher loading, or winged blade loading equipment used in heavy commercial sites, the SP84 is made for a standard, cost-efficient line of personal and light-commercial vehicles.

It delivers professional features without the cost or size of low end industrial equipment.

FAQ 5: What is better, V plow or straight blade?

Both have advantages, but for most homeowners and small contractors, a straight blade is the most expected and versatile solution.

Straight Blade (SP84):

  • Easy to use
  • Better for long driveways, parking lot, and roads
  • Lower maintenance
  • More affordable
  • Faster to learn
  • Better control of height and level

V Plow:

  • Better for deep snow breaking
  • More complex hydraulics
  • Higher cost
  • More maintenance

Unless you’re operating commercial wheel loaders, skid steers, or high-volume pusher loading systems, a straight blade like the SP84 offers the best balance of performance, simplicity, and reliability.

Why the Farmry SP84 Stands Out

The SP84 belongs to a full line of Farmry product types that give serious snow-clearing power to everyday vehicles. It is:

  • Built for durability
  • Designed for fast clearing
  • Compatible with many vehicle types
  • Easy to handle, drive, and store
  • Ideal for snow, ice, and mixed winter conditions
  • A smart investment of money that pays off every year

Whether you’re clearing a driveway, parking lot, or service roads, the SP84 delivers professional results with the convenience of a hitch-mounted snow plow system.

FAQs

What scenarios is this snow plow suitable for?

It is suitable for light personal use, and can clear freshly fallen snow in areas like residential/small-scale parking lots and driveways. It is not suitable for removing compacted frozen snow lumps or ice left by large municipal/commercial snow plows, nor for handling excessive snow, ice, sand, or gravel (as this will damage the equipment/vehicle).

Are there any hardware requirements for the vehicle to install the snow plow?

The vehicle needs to be equipped with a standard 2-inch Class 3 front-mount receiver. And for the front receiver hitch, need to make sure the cross beam is flat which is compatible to Snow Plow.While below one is unable to compatible to Snow Plow, which has a step on the cross beam.

What are the vehicle weight requirements after installing the snow plow?

It must comply with the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR, found on the driver’s side door):

1) If the front axle is overloaded, add rear ballast (sandbags are recommended; the weight of the securing device is included in the ballast weight) and secure it evenly behind the rear axle;

2) If the front passenger’s weight exceeds 300 lbs, the total weight must still not exceed the limit;

3) The vehicle’s load capacity decreases when carrying cargo; weigh the configured vehicle if in doubt.

Can I drive a vehicle with a mounted snow plow on public roads?

No. This equipment is not designed for public road use. In most regions, vehicles with mounted snow plows require additional lighting kits and safety chains to travel on highways, but this equipment is not recommended for use on public roads.

What is the speed limit for snow plowing and transporting the snow plow?

Do not exceed 15 km/h (10 mph):

1) Overspeeding during snow plowing may overload the equipment or cause vehicle loss of control;

2) Overspeeding during transport may cause engine overheating;

3) Reduce speed if the blade bounces during operation.
