That matters because it is easy to blame the old belt when the pulley is actually what is destroying it.
A Burning Rubber Smell Is a Warning, Not a Normal Part of Mowing
If you smell warm or burning rubber, don't simply finish the field and investigate later.
Gates recommends using sight, sound, and smell when diagnosing belt drives, specifically noting warm-rubber odor, squealing or grinding sounds, pulley debris, and signs of belt burning or cracking. How Do You Know If a Flail Mower Belt Is Too Loose?
There is no reliable universal “push it with your thumb and see how it feels” rule for every flail mower.
Farmry gives an actual specification for its current LFS Series manual: check belt tension after the first 20 hours of use and every 40 hours thereafter. Applying approximately 22 pounds of force halfway between the pulleys should produce about 3/8 inch of belt deflection.
The current VLF Series manual gives the same 20-hour/40-hour inspection interval and approximately 22-pound, 3/8-inch check.
Do not assume those numbers apply to every Farmry mower or another brand. Different series can use different belt quantities, pulley layouts, tensioning systems, and specifications. How to Check Belt Tension Safely

Don't Ignore the Idler Pulley or Tensioner
When a belt keeps loosening after you adjust it, the belt may be telling you about another problem.
Depending on the mower design, the component may be described as an idler pulley, tensioner, tensioner spring, or drive-belt press roller. Its job is related to maintaining the belt's intended path and tension. A damaged tensioner is specifically listed by Farmry as a cause of belt slippage, while a tensioner spring that has lost its force or broken is listed as a cause of belt failure.

Why Can a Brand-New Belt Start Slipping?
This is where belt replacement gets expensive if the diagnosis was incomplete.
A new belt can slip because the wrong size was installed, pulley grooves are worn, alignment is off, the tensioner is damaged, debris is packed into the drive, or the mower is operating under abnormal load. How to Replace a Flail Mower Belt Without Treating It Like a Lawn-Mower Deck Belt
One important distinction: a tractor-mounted Farmry flail mower is not the same belt-replacement job as a riding lawn mower deck.

Catch those signs early and work through the whole drive system rather than simply throwing another belt at it.
