10 Wood Chipper Safety Tips That Could Save Your Life
A wood chipper can quickly turn brush and tree limbs into useful wood chips. For farmers, landscapers, homesteaders, and acreage owners, it saves hours of cutting, hauling, and debris disposal.
But are wood chippers dangerous? They can be. Wood chipper accidents may involve contact with chipper blades, entanglement in the feed mechanism, falling branches, flying debris, burns, or dangerous projectiles from the discharge chute. Severe injuries often happen when an operator reaches into the infeed hopper, wears loose clothing, or begins clearing jams before the moving parts stop.
Good wood chipper safety starts with training, inspection, personal protective equipment, and careful operation. These ten safety rules apply broadly to gasoline, hydraulic-feed, and PTO wood chipper equipment. Always follow the operator’s manual and instructions provided by the chipper manufacturer.
1. Complete Wood Chipper Safety Training
Never learn how to operate a wood chipper while the first branch is already entering the machine.
Before starting, identify the infeed chute, discharge area, feed mechanism, guards, emergency shut off, and other wood chipper safety devices. Where fitted, learn how to operate feed control bars, panic bars, and reverse-feed controls.
Never allow children, untrained workers, or anyone affected by alcohol, drugs, medication, or extreme fatigue to operate the equipment.
2. Wear the Right Safety Gear
Personal protective equipment reduces exposure to wood chips, noise, splinters, and small debris.
Recommended safety gear includes:

Safety glasses or a face shield

Hearing protection

Work gloves
-
Safety footwear
-
A hard hat where falling branches are possible

Close fitting clothing
Tie long hair securely above the shoulders. Remove loose jewelry, scarves, hoodie strings, and loose clothing that could become caught on brush or pulled toward the feed mechanism.
Gloves protect against splinters, but they do not make it safe to place fingers near the blades. Avoid headphones because you need to stay alert and hear changes in engine speed or machine vibration.
3. Establish a Safe Work Area
Keep children, pets, coworkers, and bystanders away from the chipper. Never assume someone will remain where you last saw them.
Clear ropes, tools, fuel cans, branches, and other tripping hazards from the work area. Leave enough space to step away if a long branch swings or twists while being pulled into the machine.
Inspect the area for overhead wires, unstable tree limbs, fences, buildings, and traffic. The discharge chute must never point toward people, animals, vehicles, windows, or property. Foreign objects and wood debris can leave the discharge area as dangerous projectiles.
4. Set the Machine on Level Ground
Place the wood chipper on firm, dry, and level ground. Apply the parking brake and use wheel restraints when required so the machine cannot roll, tip, or move during operation.
Never operate the chipper on steep or unstable ground. Do not transport or reposition the machine while the blades, rotor, or feed mechanism are running.
For PTO equipment, confirm that the tractor, hitch, driveline, safety chain, PTO guards, and parking system are properly secured. The tractor must also meet the chipper manufacturer’s horsepower and PTO speed requirements.
Feed tray extensions, guards, and the discharge chute should be installed and secured before startup.
5. Inspect the Chipper Before Every Use
Most accidents can be prevented by finding problems before power is applied.
Check for:

Loose bolts, nuts, pins, and blade fasteners

Missing guards, shields, or covers

Damaged or worn chipper blades

Blockages in the infeed chute or discharge chute

Damaged belts, tires, PTO guards, or hydraulic lines

Tangled rope, wire, or vegetation around moving parts

Proper operation of safety devices and emergency controls
Remove tools, stones, metal, glass, plastic, and other foreign objects from the infeed hopper.
Do not operate the equipment if a guard is missing or a safety feature does not work. Allow the engine or PTO to reach the operating speed recommended by the manufacturer before feeding materials.
6. Feed Branches Butt End First
Stand beside the infeed chute rather than directly behind the branch.
Feed branches butt end first, with the thicker cut end entering before the smaller tree limbs and crown. This allows the feed mechanism to grip the branch more consistently and reduces sudden twisting.
When feeding brush and tree limbs:

Keep the branch crown pointing away from the hopper

Stand beside the feed tray

Push from the rear of the long branch

Release the branch when the chipper takes control

Step back instead of following it toward the hopper
An operator manually pushes brush only until the machine securely takes hold. Never lean over the hopper, straddle a branch, or force material into the blades.
7. Keep Hands and Feet Away From Moving Parts
Never place your hands, feet, or fingers beyond the protective curtain or inside the infeed hopper while the chipper has power.
Allow the machine to pull branches through at its own speed. If material stops feeding, use an approved push tool or another long branch. Do not use a short stick that requires your hands to move close to the blades.
Never kick debris into the hopper with your feet. Avoid pieces that are too short to control safely.
If clothing, rope, or brush becomes caught, activate the emergency shut off, feed control bar, or panic bar where fitted. Do not attempt to pull the material backward while the feed mechanism is still moving.
8. Feed Only Suitable Wood Materials
Inspect every branch before feeding it into the machine.
Do not chip wood containing:

Nails or screws

Fencing wire

Chains or rope

Rocks and soil
-
Glass or metal

Construction hardware
Foreign objects can break chipper blades, block the discharge chute, create unusual vibration, or be thrown from the machine.
Do not use the chipper to push over trees, remove stumps, or process material beyond its rated capacity. Feeding too many branches at once can overload the power system and create a blockage.
9. Shut Down Before Clearing Jams
Clearing jams is one of the most dangerous parts of using a wood chipper.
If the engine slows, the machine vibrates, or wood chips stop leaving the discharge chute, stop feeding immediately. Never add more materials in the hope that the blockage will clear itself.
For an engine-powered chipper:

Move the throttle to idle.

Shut off the engine.

Remove the ignition key where applicable.

Close the fuel valve.

Disconnect the spark-plug wire.

Wait for all moving parts to stop.
For a PTO wood chipper, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor, remove the ignition key, set the brake, and wait for the rotor and blades to stop completely.
Only then should you use the manufacturer-approved procedure for clearing jams. Reinstall all guards, covers, and safety devices before restarting.
10. Maintain the Machine and Stay Alert
Regular maintenance is part of chipper safety.
Inspect blades, belts, bearings, fasteners, guards, and safety labels at the recommended intervals. Dull blades can reduce feeding performance, while loose bolts or damaged components may cause excessive vibration or equipment failure.
Keep the work area free from oil, fuel, wood chips, and debris. Operate engine-powered equipment outdoors because exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
Allow hot engine parts to cool before refueling, maintenance, or storage. Keep a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit nearby, but outside the immediate operating area.
Wood Chipper Safety Depends on Daily Habits
Wood chipper accidents often begin with small shortcuts: skipping an inspection, wearing loose clothing, standing in the wrong position, ignoring loose bolts, or reaching toward a jam before the blades stop.
Safe operators use the right gear, inspect their equipment, feed branches butt end first, stay clear of moving parts, and follow the shutdown procedure every time.
